NY Post Article in Favor of Keeping 30th Street Helipad

Here is a link to a heavily biased New York Post article that was published today regarding the civil litigation surrounding the 30th Street Heliport. In the article, the author draws a supposed matter of fact conclusion that "the suit should fail," based on a sloppy summary of partial data. Feel free to send your opinion of the article to the editor of the post at letters@nypost.com .

Shift in Operation at South Street Heliport

The lease on the South Street heliport is currenly held by the Port Authority. When the lease expires this year, the Port Authority has decided not to renew. Instead, control of the heliport will be passed to the NYCEDC. In recent conversations with EDC, it was indicated that this shift will hopefully better enable the EDC to act on complaints received from the public, especially those concerning tour helicopters. Although New York City cannot directly regulate helicopters overflying Manhattan, It does control the licences for the Manhattan heliports. The 34th street heliport is currently heavily regulated to discourage tour helicopters from taking off and landing there. There is also civil litigation pending, in connection with the 30th Street heliport. If the court comes down with a decision in favor of the plaintiff, this heliport could also see new regulations. The only remaining heliport in Manhattan is the one located at South Street on Pier 6.

New York City Economic Development Corporation

The New York City Economic Development Corporation is a quasi New York City governmental organization that works in connection with the city government in a variety of areas. The NYCEDC is currently working on the following projects to help deal with unwanted helicopter noise in NYC:

  1. Revamping the 311 operator script to more effectively route helicopter noise complaints. The NYCEDC has submitted an order that calls received by 311 operators regarding helicopter noise be routed to a representative at the NYCEDC who can make sure that the complaint or report be passed along to the appropriate parties (helicopter operators, FAA, Mayor's office, etc.).
  2. Re-convening a group to take the place of the discontinued "helicopter noise task force." The NYCEDC is currently working to implement a scheduled round table type of meeting where representatives from the FAA, representatives from media helicopters operators, and possibly the any other relevant NY governmental organizations. The purpose of these round table meetings will be to address public issues pertaining to aircraft operators, including helicopter noise.
  3. Regulating the South Street Heliport. After 47 years, the Port Authority had decided that it will no longer regulate the South Street Heliport. The NYCEDC is looking to step in and assume the role. Click here for a NY Times article pertaining to this subject.

To get involved with the NYCEDC, they can be contacted through their website by following this link.

New York City Environmental Protection Committee

According to New York City Local Law No. 113, the commissioner of environmental protection is resposible for investigating and proposing solutions, relating to aircraft noise in NYC. Click here to visit the site of the Environmental Protection Committee for New York City. This statute, as amended, was passed in 2005. It mandated that the Commissioner submit a proposal to mitigate aircraft noise, based on her study, to the Mayor, no later than 24 months after the passage of Local Law No. 13, as amended in 2005. I have submitted a request to know what the findings of the study were (to the extent that they are available to the public) and what was proposed to the Mayor. Feel free to go to the Committee's site and make your own inquiries.

Hudson River Helicopter Noise Collalition

The Hudson River Helicopter Noise Colallition is a group that is comprised of New York and New Jersey residents, working to acheive the same goals as this Site. The HRHNC is currently developing a website where local residents can participate in a petition to help curb helicopter noise. In order to avoid duplicating efforts, a link to this petition will be included as soon as the HRHNC site is up and running. Those who participate in the petition currently existing on this site will be included on the HRHNC petition as well, unless expressly prohibited by the partcipant. Being that the HRHNC has been getting involved with solving this problem for a much longer time that this Site, they have been gracious enough to share some of the current developments and recent events pertaining to helicopter noise in the greater NYC area. Those items will also be posted on this Site in the near future.
