Dear Neighbor,

As State elected officials representing the Upper West Side of Manhattan, we write in response to recent complaints regarding increased helicopter traffic over the neighborhood. In my neck of the woods (Washington Heights) the news media, not tourist flights are the helicopters that are ruining our quality of life. For whatever reason, some of the local news networks, feel like traffic in the George Washington Bridge is newsworthy. Generally there are 1-3 helicopters hovering for a span of up to 1 hour, between 5:30 and 7:30 in the morning. It is insane! We have to use a fan, even in the winter, just for white noise purposes to keep from being awakened but the pre-dawn noise assault.

This morning the Fox 5 helicopter, rather than hovering, was flying laps over the NY side of the bridge, passing over the top of my building about every 45 seconds. This continued from about 5:45 until 6:30. This kind of offense is not welcome any time. But while I’m still adjusting to the daylight savings schedule? Come on, people, that is just abusive. My neighborhood is completely quiet and tranquil, other than the infuriating sound of helicopter rotors passing overhead, every 45 seconds. I was prompted to send an email to Fox expressing my views on the matter. With the weather beginning to thaw, it will become even more of an issue, with open windows at night, etc.. If you are affected by the media helicopters, please join me, in taking a moment to express your displeasure, by directing an email or phone call to their attention. Links for contacting the local news stations are provided here.
